PinBook: Sleep Like a Tiger

Author: Mary Logue

Illustrator: Pamela Zagarenski

Sleep Like a Tiger

A little girl isn’t sleepy. Her wise parents are understanding. Sleeping is not required, but getting ready for bed is. The conversation that follows is both believable and beautiful.

“Does everything in the world go to sleep?” The question is answered with vivid language and whimsical illustrations.

“Tiny snails?”

“They curl up like a cinnamon roll inside their shell.”

As the parents leave the room, the girl begins to think of all the animals her parents told her about. And soon she is fast asleep.

Sleep Like a Tiger Homeschool Activities

#1 – I love Pamela Zagarenski’s art work! She has a style that is entirely all her own. Her use of crowns, wheels and whales are very creative and add that special can’t stop looking at character.

#2 – Try to recreate a one of her paintings using your own creative elements. For example, instead of crowns on everyone’s head, how about tri corner hats? or cats? What can you replace the wheels with?

Pin#3 – What goes on at night while you are asleep? Make a list together of what you might think goes on in the dark while you sleep. I loved the experiments and observations in Explore Night Science!: With 25 Great Projects by Cindy Blobaum.

#4 – Try to think of other animals with strange sleeping habits. What about giraffes and horses that sleep standing up? Can you think of ways that your sleeping habit is similar to the stranger sleeping habits of these animals?

#5 – Check out Animals Are Sleeping by Suzanne Slade and Sweet Dreams: How Animals Sleep by Kimiko Kajikawa for some great animal sleeping facts!
