We’ve been on a geography kick for the past few days, and all of the interest has reminded me of a few things I forgot in my post on Monday.
We bought a state quarters map from the local hobby store and have been pilfering Dad’s change looking for state quarters. We have all of them except for a handful.
As we find each quarter we use an iPad app named Quarters to have a look at the details of the coins. Sorry I can’t link the app. The only name the app shows is Quarters, but every search I do is pulling up drinking games! The app is simple — it just shows a close-up detail of the coins and gives a brief blurb about the symbols on each one. It was also free.
In addition to the quarter collecting we have also been viewing these two YouTube videos:
Fifty Nifty United States – Olivia can just about sing all of them. I think in a few days more she will have them all down. This is how I learned the states in the fourth grade and still sing them in my head today when I need to name them.
Wakko’s 50 States and Capitals – This one is just fun. We need to listen a while more on this one, but I bet we’ll get it in the end.
In addition she asked to start a state book the other day. We will see where that one goes. I am not sure what she has in mind. Regardless, she is learning an awful lot about states, capitals, and her country.
