Olivia has been walking around telling everyone Happy October today. It really is a special month. It’s fall, even if the weather doesn’t always cooperate. There’s a birthday and an anniversary this month. And All Hallows Eve which is such a favorite of everyone.
Outside my Window
There is no window. It is not 90 plus degrees here, so we are outside. Of course the mosquitos are still eating me up. They seem to like me so much better than everyone else, and they have been horrible this wet, rainy summer. I can’t wait for the first good cold night or two to kill ’em all off.
I am Thankful For
Our co-op. I just can’t say it enough. Today was our last day before our first quarter break, and I am still in love with the fact that one morning a week we get science (with messy experiments), fine arts, history projects, handicrafts, and so much more. That leaves me time to really focus on the basics. Love it.
I am Thinking About
Feeling like I’m slowing down and less stressed. Notice I didn’t say slowing down, but feeling like it. We have something to do almost every day of the week, but they are all good things. I am not willing (or can’t) give up any of them. To that end I am trying to think of ways to live the week without feeling stressed out. One thing I have done is started leaving the house early for every event. Even if that means we get there early, the extra 10 minutes I sit waiting for an event to begin is worth the peace I gain in not being rushed. I have a whole list of strategies I am working on. Maybe a blog post is in order?
From the Schoolroom
We are coming up on another scheduled break, but I don’t think we are going to take it — kind of. Instead of totally taking five days off I am contemplating: math games, reading aloud (them to me and LOTS of me to them), art every day, and at least one good poetry tea time. Add to that some Frontier Girl badge work and lots of play in the park, and it will be a nice break from the ordinary.
From the Kitchen
October menu is made, and I am going to try to get it up this week. My September list actually lasted us five weeks, which means my pile of receipts was also a five week pile instead of a four week one. I think I may have cut the budget some, but my tracking was not as good as it could have been. This month I am going to keep a handwritten tally of food expenditures on the fridge to hopefully aid in some budget cutting.
I am Creating
A washcloth. But I’m knitting it!!! More about that tomorrow.
I am Reading
Desiring the Kingdom: Worship, Worldview, and Cultural Formation (Cultural Liturgies) This is our new Classical Mom’s book club book. Have yet to crack the cover.
I am Praying
For sick friends and friends with sick babies.
I am Listening To
John’s pencil scratch against the paper. He is sitting on the back porch beside me drawing a picture. Drawing class at co-op has inspired him to practice using perspective. He’s come a long way in five weeks of drawing class.
Clicking Around
Around the House
I need to get the Fall decor out and put about. And we need some mums. And the windows really need cleaning inside and out. Maybe a project for our (semi) off-week next week.
One of My Favorite Things
I splurged at Sam’s Club and now there is toilet cleaner, disinfecting wipes, paper towels and window cleaning under every bathroom sink in the house. (This house has four bathrooms. Obscene amount of toilets to clean.) This means I can walk in a bathroom and in about five minutes have totally cleaned the toilet, the floor around the toilet, the mirror and the sink without planning ahead or leaving the room. It’s the little things that make life great.
Plans for the Week
Our regular events dominate the week, but this week we are trying to do them in a more relaxed way. And, drum roll please, Matt has drill this weekend with his old unit! Which means he will now be home at night on the weekends he has drill. Finally washing our hands of the last of this deployment.
