Homeschool Mom’s Boot Camp

Life just kind of sneaks up on me sometimes. I move along, going about my day-to-day and sometimes begin to feel “off” or overwhelmed or like something just isn’t quite right. It usually doesn’t take much reflection before I am able to put my finger on what the problem is. Maybe my pants are too tight, maybe I am lacking in prayer, maybe the house is cluttered. Whatever the reason, once I stop to look, I am often pretty quick to pinpoint the problem that is eating at me.

Doing something about it? Now that’s an entirely different issue. Because, let me tell ya, I can procrastinate, makes excuses, and deny my culpability in the problem with the best of them. Taking action takes effort. And I’m tired and more than a wee bit lazy most days. But then I reach the point where something must simply be done.

Enter the Homeschool Mom’s Boot Camp. I’ve got some changes I need to make. Since misery loves company, I decided to recruit some friends to provide moral support while they make changes of their own. The few and the proud — Kristen from Teaching Stars and Chelli from The Planted Trees — have both stepped up to meet the challenge. Over the next two weeks we will be laying out some of our biggest trouble areas, attempting to make some changes, and reporting back on how things are going.

So what big changes do I need to make? I hear-by declare that for the next two weeks (and hopefully much longer) I will begin our school day by [8:30] each and every morning without fail.  I am quite ashamed to admit that most days, our school day does not start until 10 or after, despite the fact that we are hardly ever in bed past 7 a.m. Due to this, we are not getting much accomplished beyond the basics and the most interesting parts of our curriculum are being passed over. I need to make this change. More on how I am going to go about it later this weekend.

We are also issuing an invitation for you to join us. If you have an area in your life that needs a little work, you are willing to take steps to change that area, and you want to share it, simply leave a comment below with a link to your blog. I will add you to the participant list, and each time I post an update, your link will be included. We start on Monday! Are you up to the Homeschool Mom’s Boot Camp challenge?

    Love this idea Pam!

What’s my problem area? Spending too much time on the computer. But if I try and do something about that, I’ll never hear how you’re all going with your boot camp!

    • Pam says:

Trust me, Sue. The computer is a BIG part of my issue as well. I will still be spending time — but later in the day and in moderation.

  • I love your self challenge. I too have trouble getting school started on time. Thanks for the encouragement. 🙂

  • Mandy says:

I’ll have to think about that, there are so many things I need to work on 😛 Sue, forgot to ever get back to you about your whole facebook/online dilemma. I hope that is going well for you and that you did not leave FB. 😛

  • I’m SO excited to start up with you guys! This is such a great idea and just the kick in the pants I needed to get moving! Can’t wait to start!

I love the button! Looking forward to reading Boot Camp posts! 🙂

Oh, I probably need boot camp… Our schedule has gotten looser and looser this year and the little boys need me to give them constructive work with which to occupy their time. (They might not think so, but I sure do!) But it seems like whenever I commit to anything publicly, it’s a surefire way for me to NOT be able to do whatever it is I’m committing to!

I’ll check in as I can, though 🙂 I need to make a schedule and really work on spending better time with the little boys.

I completely sympathize with your problem of only getting the basics done and not having time for anything else, though. I end up in that boat a lot (although right now I have sort of the opposite problem), and for me it’s sure recipe for burnout. Mom needs fun stuff, too!

Ooooookaaaaay……..very hesitantly raising my hand. I’m in. Sort of. I think. I have so many areas that need work, including blogging regularly, that it’s hard to pick just one.

I guess it’s good to be held accountable. But so publicly?? Eek. And Pam, I saw that picture of you on Kristen’s blog. I swear I’ll shape up. Really.

Our problem seems similar… going to be following this closely.

I know I need boot camp. I will tentatively give this a shot. Do I just link my blog up and then write up my first boot camp post?
