One Giant Leap

I love it when a kids book spans the ages and leaves everyone with amazement and wonder. One Giant Leap, the story of the first moon landing, does just that.

For those of us, and our children who were born after this great American event, most of the suspense, wonder and amazement is lost. Not anymore! I loved how I could feel my heart speed up as I read to my children of these amazing men doing unheard of things. Suddenly I was one of those sitting in front of an old black and white T.V. set, watching, listening, waiting.

One of the best living astronomy books in my arsenal, One Giant Leap gives plenty of information, but also explores the excitement, fear, elation and finely relief of the astronauts on this incredible maiden journey to the moon.

And let’s not forget the paintings of Mike Wimmer. He has illustrated everything from picture book biographies to American Girl books. The realistic crisp paintings add life to the incredible story Robert Burleigh tells.

One Giant Leap Homeschool Activities

#1 – I love showing my kids actual video footage of historical events. Check out the NASA site for original footage of the Apollo Moon Landing.

#2 – Perhaps you would like to try your hand at being a NASA engineer. Make a lunar landing module and test it out!

#3 – Still want more! Here are some more lunar landing resources.
