It’s a big week. Today kicks off birthday week at our house. My husband celebrated his special day with pictures from the kids and pizza and cheesecake for dinner. Mine and Matt’s birthdays are exactly six days apart. For years we have shared this week of birthdays between the two of us — one little lump of celebration in the big old year. Then five years ago along came John.

We went out to dinner for Matt’s birthday that year. We had a gift card and a free babysitter for Olivia, but I didn’t feel up to making much of a night out of it, though I wasn’t due until the end of the month. After the restaurant we walked in the park and sat in the swing, but I felt awkward and out of sorts. We called it a night and went on home.

The next morning Olivia and I were getting in the car to return some library books when my water broke. John was born one day after his dad’s birthday and five before my own. Birthday week got a little more festive that day. Yep, it’s a big week.
