Being a mom quickly teaches you all the things you were wrong about before you were a parent. Here are a few of mine I have noticed lately.

  • It is not true that cutting the crust off of sandwiches is coddling your children. I can never remember anyone cutting the crust off of my sandwich (though at one time someone likely did). I have always thought that the crust was a perfectly fine and even superior part of the bread, so I didn’t understand why in the world moms “caved to their children’s demands” and went to the effort to remove a perfectly good part of a sandwich. Now I know that the crust is rather tough for little ones to chew and eat. So I do cut off the crust from sandwiches – for the time being anyway.
  • Sometimes every light in the house does need to be on. This used to drive me crazy. We would pull up to my brother-in-laws home (about 15 years ago when his kids were small), every single room would have a light on and everyone would be in the living room. What about all that energy they were wasting? For years my husband and I faithfully turned off lights as soon as we left a room. Now, I go around the house at dusk turning on lights in rooms where no one sits. Why? Because the kids move from room to room so much and can’t reach the light switches, or if I am entering a room it is likely I will have my hands full of baby, or something else, or both. Now I know.
  • Every snotty nose doesn’t need to be wiped immediately. Used to gross me out to see kids with a snotty nose. Ok, if I am honest, it still does. Yet, when my little ones are suffering from a cold, I have found that if I jump up and wipe every single time then we end up with one very, very sore nose. Even though we use the expensive tissue with lotion. So, I have learned to let this one go some  – at least until I can’t stand to see it anymore. Note: I do keep their noses wiped while in public.

I am sure I will be adding more to this list as they grow. Would love to read yours – drop me a comment.
