Their faces lit up with excitement as they clapped, cheered and squealed. Some days it takes so little to make them happy, and today exploding bags of carbon dioxide made from baking soda and vinegar were just the thing.

“Do it again! Can we do it one more time, Mom?” they begged. It was easy to say yes, and the second round elicited as much enthusiasm as the first.

It rained today. And rained. And rained. And rained some more. Fortunately, the kids have no predetermined notions that learning is not allowed to take place on a Saturday, and we filled much of our afternoon with science lessons and a bit of math. We made the exploding bags, watched an episode of The Magic School Bus, read some picture books, practiced classifying and sorting objects and had discussions on why that might come in handy for scientists.

And we had a good time learning. Which is the most important thing of all.
