This is an update post for my Homeschool Mom’s Boot Camp. My boot camp challenge was to have school started by 8:30 each morning. You can read more about how it began and updates here (read from the bottom up).

Boot camp is still going pretty well here. Honestly, we are on a bit of a hiatus for Thanksgiving week. My school calendar says we are taking Tuesday-Friday off this week, though I do have plans for the kids to do some math on the computer and such. I don’t have any Thanksgiving activities planned. Bad mom, but I suppose they will survive. I also don’t have plans for us to jump up and start early every morning. So we are relaxing.

When brings me to my first tip today. I think it is important to indulge some of the time. I have designated Saturday as our indulgence day around here. Since we are getting up and getting moving every other day of the week, and that is against my natural preferred state of starting the day s-l-o-w-l-y with as much quiet time as I can muster, on Saturdays I try to indulge in starting slow and enjoying all of the morning activities we really like (cartoons, involved breakfasts, computer time). And it feels so good! Actually I enjoy the activities even more now that we are doing them much less. In fact, this past Saturday we stayed in our PJs until 11:00. Of course this only works if you have nothing planned on Saturday morning.

For the update, last week went well up until Friday — which brings me to my second tip for today. I got seriously off-track on Friday due to circumstances out of my control. There was something that popped up right as it was time to start school, and we took the time out to take care of it. Then it took hours for us to get back on track. First, I seriously need to think about not letting one little thing derail me for so long (personality flaw). Secondly, I am glad that I took the time to do what was important without getting all agitated about not “meeting my boot camp goal.” (Another personality flaw that I handled better than the first.) So, my advice is to roll with it. When things don’t go just as planned, don’t get upset, just go with what you’ve got.

The next challenge will be to see if I can get right back to the discipline of boot camp after a few days off. Tuesday morning will tell the tale on that one.
