Ahem. I had intended on having photos of the Word’s Ugliest Knitting Attempt to show you, but John came by and pulled the needle out of my stitches this morning and that was that. It was a mercy killing — there were lumps and loops where there were supposed to be only smooth stitches. This was just the last of my frogging knitting sessions. I have made the attempt about four times now, but have yet to make any progress worth keeping. I keep watching the videos and trying again and again, but things seem slow in clicking. Not to mention that in all of my poking around on yarn and stitch sites I have come across a couple of really fun crochet projects I want to try, and I have yet to find anything knitted to get excited about. After all, it is hard to get hyped about sweaters, hats, and scarves when the mercury is hovering about the century mark every, single, scorching day.

So today I went in search of professional help. I had to run an errand for VBS and since I didn’t have kids trying to dismantle the checkout aisle in Michael’s with lurid displays of grabby avarice I took the time to inquire about the knitting classes. It just so happened the instructor was in the store, and we had a nice chat. After a conversation about my attempts at both English- and Continental-style and muscle memory, she decided that I really don’t need a full four-week course of classes, but instead a little jump-start and pointers. (I talk a good talk.) I am taking her at her word, mostly because there is no way Matt is going to let me out of the house at prime melt-down bed time four weeks in a row to attend the class. And besides, it will be less expensive for me to pay the sitter for a couple of hours. So I hope to meet her at her stitch session at a local coffee shop next week.

In the meantime she encouraged me to keep practicing and to not be afraid of cotton yarns. So I picked up the Christmas colored Sugar’n Cream, because everyone can use more Christmas washcloths, right? Hopefully I will get the chance to attempt another practice run tonight. I also picked up the yarns I needed to make bagels from Tasty Crochet. I had been wanting to make felt food for a while now, but the sewing also intimidated me. Imagine my delight when I came across the patterns for crochet versions. They look like tons of fun.

And yes, that is a new Nook in the photo. Matt decided that he wanted a Nook Color for Father’s Day. I actually wanted the easier reading of the B&W, so he took my three-month-old color and I got a Father’s Day gift. We are both just as pleased as we can be with the transaction. I have been relishing A Little Way of Homeschooling on mine. The essays in this book are so very inspiring. I love the fact that there is a section of the book for those moms who take the bits from unschooling that works for them and weaves that into their homeschool along with other methods. It is a refreshing approach to writing about a homeschooling method. I found myself nodding along to this one so often, I am sure this will become a regular re-read around here. Next I have a few novels loaded up that I want to have a go at. One of my summer goals is to read at least three new novels and back off the non-fiction for a while.

You can find more books and (and some real) projects at Ginny’s for the Yarn Along. And maybe next week I’ll actually have something to show you here.
