Math + Poetry = Fun for everyone!
If you are memorizing or even just enjoying poetry with your kids, chances are you have heard of a few of the poems used as inspiration in this delightfully fun kids book!
J. Patrick Lewis has taken well known poems by famous poets and turned them into hilarious math puzzles. Some of the titles include, Hilaire Belloc’s “Crackerjack Yak” and Walt Whitman’s “Web-Covered Shoe.”
Enjoy the poem and then solve the riddles!
Edgar Allan Poe’s Pie Homeschool Activities
For younger kids: Can you write a math riddle? Try your hand at making it rhyme like the poetry in this book. Or, look at Grapes of Math by Greg Tang for some ideas.
For older kids: Write your own! Be sure to find a poem to inspire you first. Then try your hand at changing it to add a math puzzle.
For everyone: Pick a poet from the book and read some more of their works. Do you like their style? Do you like the subjects they choose? Share with your family one or two of your favorite poems from your poet. Here are some great resources to get you started:

- Seeing the Blue Between: Advice and Inspiration for Young Poets by Paul B. Janeczko – This looks like a fantastic read for older kids looking to be inspired by poets. 32 poets have written letters of advice followed by one of their poems. There are also short bios of each.
